About Bulgaria
Cape Kaliakra

Cape Kaliakra is situated at 12 km east from the town of Kavarna and at 60 km north-east from the city of Varna. It is a narrow peninsula about 2 km long which is visible from afar and because of that is a good landmark for coastal navigation.

This is extremely picturesque site. The name “Kaliakra” means “Beautiful cape” on Greek. First to appreciate its beauty were the tribe Tirizi – Thracian tribe who built here a fortified village. During XIV century Bulgarian Empire is divided by three and Kaliakra becomes center of its easternmost part being one of the biggest ports in the area. During 1444 A.D. this is the place where crusaders led by Władysław Warneńczyk used as a stopover in their march against the Ottoman army. This is also the place where on 31 July 1791 the biggest battle in Black sea took place – admiral Ushakov’s squadron gives heavy beating to Ottoman armada. This sea battle ends the Russo-Turkish war from 1787-1791.

Today cape Kaliakra is beautiful archaeological and natural reserve, home for many rare birds and the waters around it are home for Black sea dolphins and navy seals.
